Brian Anderson

Adjunct Professor


Brian L. Anderson is a shareholder in the Madison office of the law firm DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. and chairs the firm's Employee Benefits Practice Group.  He practices in the areas of ERISA, employee benefits, business and tax law, nonprofit organizations, and estate planning.  In his ERISA and employee benefits practice, he works on all kinds of benefit plans and issues, including pension plans, 401(k) plans, 403(b) tax-sheltered annuities, 457 plans, ERISA fiduciary issues, nonqualified deferred compensation, section125 cafeteria plans, COBRA, HIPAA, and the Affordable Care Act.

Brian received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1980 and an LL.M. (taxation) degree from New York University in 1982.  He is a certified public accountant and holds the designation "Certified Employee Benefit Specialist" under a joint program of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, Inc., and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.  In 2001, the IRS appointed him to its Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities (ACT), which advises the IRS on policy matters relating to its oversight of retirement plans, and he served on that committee for 3 years.

He is author of the employee benefits chapter in A Guide for Wisconsin Nonprofit Organizations published by the State Bar of Wisconsin.  He is a member of the American Bar Association, the State of Bar of Wisconsin, the Minnesota State Bar Association, and the Madison Benefits Council, and a former member of the State Bar Board of Governors.  He has been listed in both the Best Lawyers of America and Wisconsin Super Lawyers.
