UW Law School hosted Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan for a series of events on Sept. 8, 2017. Throughout the day, Kagan met with students, faculty and alumni, and in the afternoon, she participated in an interview-style presentation led by Dean Margaret Raymond.
Their discussion before a Wisconsin Union audience of nearly 1,000 touched on topics ranging from Kagan's youth to her prior work experiences as dean of Harvard Law School and as solicitor general of the United States to her 7-year tenure as the Supreme Court's junior justice. Kagan also talked about the impact of Justice Antonin Scalia's death on the Court's decision-making: to avoid 4-4 deadlocks among the remaining justices, “we all made a serious effort to find common ground even where we thought we couldn’t,” she said.
Video of the hour-long event is available from Wisconsin Eye.
