About the Talk:
Forensic science plays a vital role in criminal justice but has a troubled history of scandal, bias and error. This talk will discuss competing theories of what's wrong in the field and how the underlying problems might be addressed, touching on the role of government agencies, advisory bodies, voluntary standards organizations, courts, and lawyers. Particular attention will be paid to the potential for cognitive bias in forensic analyses and the difficulty of communicating scientific findings to lay audiences, such as jurors.
