Trina Tinglum Obituary

Tinglum, Trina Janet

MADISON - Trina Janet Tinglum, 58, of Madison, died on March 22, 2021 in New York City, after a brief but fierce battle with cancer. Trina was born on September 4, 1962, in Merrill, WI. She attended elementary school and high school in Madison. She earned a law degree from the UW Law School, and a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from UW-Milwaukee. Her career was dedicated to teaching the art and craft of legal research and writing. She worked as an editor at West Publishing (later Thomson Reuters) and taught at the University of St. Thomas and Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. In 2012, she joined the faculty of the Legal Research and Writing Program at the UW Law School. Trina adored her students and dedicated herself to their professional development and their personal well-being.

Trina was a proud mom to Georgia Schmitt, 26, and Gunnar Streitz, 11, and a longtime partner with Jay Streitz. She was a passionate triathlon competitor for many years, and a devoted runner and swimmer. She loved her daily walks with the family dog, Balto. She avidly consumed news of, and humorous commentary on, current events and politics. She was a fierce advocate for a variety of causes, most notably women's equality and reproductive rights. She loved celebrity gossip, Twitter, and the New Yorker. She could make almost anyone laugh out loud. She had a beautiful sense of style. She made the world's best brownies. She loved dogs and cats like family, always extended a hand to people who were struggling, and naturally created an accepting and judgment-free space for anyone who sought her help.

Trina was preceded in death by her father, Sverre Tinglum. She is survived by her partner, Jay; her children, Georgia and Gunnar; her mom Georgia Cook; her sisters, Britt Tinglum and Kirsten Friedman; her niece Sverre LeRoy and nephew Per LeRoy. She is survived by two beloved aunties and many adored cousins. Also surviving her are her dog and soulmate Balto, and her cat, Girlfriend. The family suggests that donations in Trina's honor be made to Gilda's Club of Madison [www.gildasclubmadison.org]. A celebration of her life will be held when COVID-19 guidelines permit.[ya%]

Not sure what to say?

I only knew Trina from high school but she was always so friendly and had a bright outlook. I think she was involved in theatre in high school? Sad to hear of her passing.

To Trina's loved ones, please accept my sincere condolences. I knew Trina (and Glen) 'back in the day', when she was working at the University of Wisconsin Law School library (so was Glen), and I was a law student and I also taught legal research and writing as a teaching assistant. Even though she and I were only a year apart in age, I thought of her as a 'little sister'. I enjoyed chatting with her on a daily basis. She had a great sense of humor, a great sense of style, and always a fantastic hair cut. She helped to make my difficult law school years more enjoyable. It was always a highlight of the day to see her working behind the front desk and to be able to chat with her. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am so sad to hear this news. Trina was one of my oldest friends - we met in the 2nd grade at Huegel ,we remained friends through high school and College, she was a bridesmaid in my wedding. While its been at least 3-5 years since we last talked, when we did we always picked up where we left off. It was my hope that since I just moved back to Wisconsin , we would reconnect- I wish I could have let her know I was thinking of her. She was such a light and I do remember her making brownies and chocolate chip cookies on Tanager Trail!
Sending love and sympathy to her family and to Trina's mom and sisters.

Georgia and Gunnar - I join many who are thinking of you at this sad time. I met your mom a couple years ago when I did some legal research training sessions with her students. We joked that I had to impress her, as I worked for the competitor of her former employer, West. Trina and I had much in common and felt an instant connection. The last time I saw her nin-perso was at the April 2020 election, when she was doing her part for Andrew Yang. Our last conversation was about schools for you, Gunnar. She thought you were a pretty awesome kid! So very sorry about your loss. Peace and healing. Liz Christians, of Madison.

Professor Tinglum was a fantastic and genuine teacher who made so many of her students better (myself included). She really made a difference -- and she will be sincerely missed.

Having worked with Trina for many years, I saw firsthand how devoted she was to her students. They adored her kindness, empathy, and--obviously--great teaching. She was a wonderful colleague and team member--funny, energetic, and always willing to volunteer. She'll be very sorely missed.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Trina. Her son Gunnar and my son Eli were friends at Learning Gardens. I remember meeting Trina at an event there and thinking I should meet this woman. She seems pretty awesome, and she's an older mom like me. May memories of her bring you joy as your sadness and grief lifts.

My heart is heavy today. Trina was my childhood friend from elementary through middle school years. We had lots of sleepovers, plays, and riding our bikes around the Meadowood Neighborhood. She was always a good student so I am not surprised she pursued a career in Law. My heart goes out to Trina's family.
